Sunshine and a Birthday

It is rainy and cold today.  Feeling so March like - but not last week - no last week we were plopped right into the middle of summer!

See - short sleeves!  I could see my kids arms again!!  I love when you break out the summer clothes and their little limbs appear again, with all their cute little kid chub and tiny elbow dents! Awww!

It was such a glorious week full of beautiful weather, yard work, house showings and the first day of Spring!

Which is also my sweet little Catherine's Birthday!

My fun loving, adventurous, outgoing, big hearted, silly two year old turned, overnight, into this big, serious, inquisitive three year old.

So serious here!  But, she's still all that she was at two - outgoing, loving, risk taker, joker, independent but she is learning and growing so fast these days.

Here she is showing us how old she is now.

It was such a gorgeous day for her!  The nicest first day of Spring in a long time!

My hubby and I have really been praying and considering Birthdays lately - we felt that there should be less focus on stuff and more focus on the celebration of life.  Celebration of the life given to us by our Creator, the blessing of another year and the blessing of that person.

So we have simplified our Birthday celebrations.  We had a few drop in visitors and some decorations - because well, what's a Birthday celebration with out balloons?  Or at least my kids would say that!

Examples of hubby's talented chalk art and balloon blowing up ability! ;)

We took the girls out to dinner - they wanted.....french fries, of course!

Then home for cake and ice cream.  I have a sad confession, I did not make her cake this year!  Terrible...I know!

Okay, no it's not really terrible, just a bit of mommy guilt at first - but I got over it quickly.  I usually love making special cakes for my kids - I took the inspiration from my mother-in-law who did that for her kids growing up and from shows like Cake Boss, 'cause they're so cool!

But this year I am just too tired - with the pregnancy and all that has happened in the last month or so - I just didn't have the energy and inspiration - not the mention that she wanted a chocolate, strawberry and blueberry cake?!?!

Yes, sounds delicious - but I dislike using red food colouring, it tastes really terrible and so we store bought her a cake.

Oreo cake, mmmmm!  I added the strawberries and blueberries, per her request.  I got a bit of creativity out by cutting the strawberries into hearts.

Notice the lit candle in the first shot and not the second?  Those are back to back shots.  She was so quick to blow it out - basically just an exhale and the flame was gone! Ha!  Also I re-read last years post from when she turned two - and I will be happy to let you know that this year she did not burst into tears when we sang "Happy Birthday!"

So the cake was consumed and enjoyed, presents were opened and played with and a sweet little one is another year older.

My 'baby', is certainly not a baby anymore!  Also she won't even be the 'baby' much longer....that's coming faster then I realize.

But she will always be a sweety, a big hearted, independent, outgoing, thoughtful, kind, sensitive and joyous blessing to us!

Searching Out Spring

Took a little trip though the county side.

I was looking for Spring.

  It's been so come and go this year, one day bright sunshine and the next, overcast and cold.  But I know Spring is on it's way - not to mention, officially on Tuesday- which is also my littlest little's Birthday....she'll be three! Crazy!

 So I went a looking, camera in hand, because I promised all of you and myself, to get back behind the lens more!

It wasn't a sunny day but it wasn't too cold either....I'll take what I can get these days!  I couldn't help but be amazed at the beauty all around me - even if the foliage isn't out yet.

God's creativity is breathtaking!!

I found this nice little wooded area full of tapped trees.  That would be amazing, to have the ability to tap your own trees!! If you do, then I'm just slightly jealous, but I would be less so if you invited me over to taste some!

I'll even make the pancakes!

I'm not trying to rush the seasons, we all know I've been busy enough - but I'm just ready for some freshness.  Spring isn't particularly one of my favourite seasons but by this time of the year I'm ready for the winter blahs to be done and eager for the warmer days.

And all in all, thinsg continue on.  It felt real good to dust off my camera and rework my shutter finger!  I even finished uploading my last wedding shoot from 2011 to my site, you can see it here if you are so inclined.

I still have good days and bad.  I still struggle with knowing where we are going in regards to the selling of our home.  I still long for country living but can't help and enjoy the convince of the city life.  I still can't keep up on the laundry or the dishes and my insides get a constant beating from this little man inside of me!

But things are good - because God is carrying me through all of this.

So I will patiently wait for Spring to come.....okay I will try to patiently wait for Spring.

Have a blessed weekend!

PS - Just a thank you for all your wonderful comments on my last post!
They lifted my heart! ♥
Also hello to some new commenters! :)  Thank you for stopping by and saying hello!
You are all such a blessing to me! Truly!

Car, Cake, Coffee and Cousins

Last weekend, two girlfriends and I headed out for a fun filled day of shopping!  The men folk had the children with them and we had until supper time to be back home.  We were headed here...

Oh the fun we had planned!  Oh the home ideas we could saturate ourselves in!  OH the hot dogs we could eat!

Instead....we ended up here....

What?  That looks like the side of the road to you?  Well that is because, it is!

Boooo!  Flat tire! :P  The ironic bit of it - because I love some good irony - is we were just saying how this friend's car was in such good condition and so glad we took her nice newish vehicle instead of my and my other friend's old beasters. lol!  Literally, five minutes before the tire went.

Ah, but all was not lost!

We got a hold of the only hubby sans children, who was available to come 'rescue' us.  I mean we could have changed the tire ourselves - but it was really windy and kinda cold and well we just love a good rescue!

Also, we had coffee.

And this delicious cake thing - called something like, peanut butter, chocolate chip cake....or something scrumptious like that.

HAHAHAH - okay so I was just re-reading this post and noticed that your could totally miss read the title for my friend - as in I am calling her delicious...I mean she's the maker of delicious cakes....ummm yeah....Super nice, sweet, friendly, caring, those are words I would use...but delicious...umm not so much! HA!

So we hunkered down in her comfy vehicle, sliced up some cake and chatter for a while until our heroes came to save the day!

But men don't always understand the importance of shopping and timing...and sometime later....our knights arrived.

It was so good of them though - it was such a blustery day and we had got the flat tire on the only main highway that leads to our Nation's Capital City...and hens, Canada's largest IKEA.  So between crazy gusts of wind, cold temperatures and drives who won't switch lanes but insist on driving right next to people trying to fix a tire, they put on the spare.  But by the time we got the spare on and we looked at the truth of it - we did not have enough time to go to IKEA.

We had fun though - I mean girlfriends, coffee and peanut butter, chocolate chip cake...who can really complain!

So the next day my hubby, girls and I had to head back up the same highway to see my Step-grandfather for his 89th Birthday!

We just might have stole a few minutes to sneak into the IKEA.....and eat a couple hot dogs.

My girls LOVE their little cousin!!  And it was pretty exciting to watch him take his fist forward crawls!

Doesn't my hubby look so happy?!  He just adores babies!!! He really does!

Here is my Step-grandpa!  At 89!

He still lives in his own, (and quite large) home.  He has an in ground pool that he maintains, drives, goes to Church, avid gardener, meets with friends, goes out for breakfast, is self-learning the piano and can even send an email now and again.  Pretty awesome!

Hubby, kids and I were there before others and we got to spend some time just chatting with Grandpa- it was nice.  Getting to hear all about his days, his past and enjoying each other.  Precious moments in deed.

It was neat to see four generations together - from 89 years to 8 months old.

And though I thought I would make a post without thinking or mentioning my dad....I can't yet.  I'm sorry - but hey I said this blog was going to be more personal....  I didn't want to keep bringing it up - but the truth is - it is still so fresh and well it does keep coming up....he does.

It's actually been a really tough week!  The shock is finally waring off and a heavy truth is settling into my heart.

I miss him!

I was hard to gather with family and not notice my dad's absence.  He was 'the life of the party' per say.  He cooked the food, caused the trouble, made people laugh and well....he just wasn't there.  I could feel it, the unspoken truth of how we all missed his presence.

On the drive home it settled in particularly hard.  I was quiet and truthfully a little down.  The sun was setting, it had been a beautiful sunny day but as I gazed out the window at the setting sun I noticed this....

Do you see it?  The little piece of a rainbow?  It completely took me by surprise!  There had been no rain and barely any clouds all day - but there in the sky was a small little rainbow.

"It's God saying He will be with you." Sweet hubby said to me.

I had to smile.

Fear not, for I am with you;
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Keeping My Word in Pictures

I left you last week saying I would get out and I would take pictures.

We did both!

It was gorgeous!  The sun was shining and the snow was melting.  The wind was on the cool side but one couldn't complain for a February day in Ontario!  That is until two days later when the skies opened up and dumped a foot of snow on us....but we won't talk about that.

 So yes, the kids and I enjoyed the nice weather and I got in a couple of shots with my ol' camera.

Like this beauty...I love the old architecture of our city!

I'm having some 'fun' in Photoshop lately, seeing as Picnik is done in April.  I'm sure going to miss that site! :(  I am pretty versed in Photoshop but I love the ease and simplicity of Picnik!

It was good to be behind the lens - I didn't take oodles of photos as I had hoped but I took more then I have in a while, enough to even make two posts! Ooooh, bet you can't wait for the next one! lol!

In other news, I have also been trying to eat a 'better' breakfast.  As opposed to coffee and something sweet. Okay, it's not my fault that cake and coffee go so well together and that I can't drink coffee after lunch....*wink wink*.  So I'm opting for something filling and with preferably protein, like eggs, toast with PB or oatmeal - something to hold me longer and keep me fuller.  This gives me better energy and makes me a little less grumpy. ;)

So here are some breakfast photos to share....'cause I promised more photos....not necessarily interesting ones! HA!

My kids love eggs!  This makes for a happy momma and littles - plus will be a great thing when we get chickens....someday.

So there you go, keeping good on my word, to get behind the lens and live a little at the same time.  It's still a challenge with life happenings, the weather being so crazy, the 'funk' feeling I get into now and again, with busyness, with laziness, with a crazy active baby kicking my insides apart, but I did it.

And I leave you with my favourite picture of the past week.  It's of the first bud from my Christmas cactus...better late then never?!?!  But it comes so bitter sweet.  This little cactus was an off shoot of my dad's cactus - he gave me a little transplanted piece in a favourite pot of his, a little over two years ago.

It has finally bloomed.

  The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad;
the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus;
 it shall blossom abundantly
and rejoice with joy and singing.
   The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it,
the majesty of Carmel and Sharon.
   They shall see the glory of the Lord,
the majesty of our God.
Strengthen the weak hands,
and make firm the feeble knees.
  Say to those who have an anxious heart,
Be strong; fear not!
Behold, your God
will come with vengeance,
with the recompense of God.
He will come and save you.”

   Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,
and the ears of the deaf unstopped;
then shall the lame man leap like a deer,
and the tongue of the mute sing for joy.
   For waters break forth in the wilderness,
and streams in the desert;
the burning sand shall become a pool,
and the thirsty ground springs of water;
in the haunt of jackals, where they lie down,
the grass shall become reeds and rushes.
  And a highway shall be there,
and it shall be called the Way of Holiness;
the unclean shall not pass over it.
It shall belong to those who walk on the way;
even if they are fools, they shall not go astray.
 No lion shall be there,
nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it;
they shall not be found there,
but the redeemed shall walk there.
  And the ransomed of the Lord shall return
and come to Zion with singing;
everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;
they shall obtain gladness and joy,
and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
