A Few of My Thirsty Journey Through Design

Did you like that title?

It's a little shout out to the ladies (and myself) who ventured with me these past 30 days of our challenge.  I give a big KUDOS!!! to you gals!! And also to my BFF and Hubby for following along on their own.

I'm proud of each of you!!

Okay - so day 31's challenge was to pick your favourite (not necessarily your 'best') photo and say why, and also to talk a little about this challenge and the past 30 days.  Before I do, I put together a little collage of some of the highlights from the past 30 days - this was inspired by my sister-in-law, Stephanie at Thirsty Soul.  She did up a few of hers in this format and I thought it looked great!

(plus then it shows up for the pic for this post and not a repeat picture - I like that idea too! Thanks for the inspiration Steph! :) ♥ )

After I picked out the photos for this collage, I could really see, that people are certainly a popular subject for me.  I think I kinda already knew that but I was a little amazed at how many of my photos contained people or people parts! ha!!  Okay..so on to my favourite and the why of it.

I think this, is my favourite picture from the challenge:

But before I get to the why of this being my favourite I have a confession...

dun, dun duuuuun!!!!

There is a secret reason to why I decided to do this challenge.  A couple of months ago, I began to get severe camera envy! Terrible, I know!! I was coveting all those 'non-entry level' DLSRs.  I Googled various ones, coveted, compared different specs, coveted,  researched, 'shopped' around, coveted some more...it was bad!

My camera is only two years old! :P (yes, I may have already taken 30 000+ photos in that time - but it's still practically 'new'! I mean I haven't even dropped it ...yet! ;) lol!!)  Soo, I was on the net, ogling cameras when I came across a site that showed how a woman actually learned to use her camera and she had before and after photos of the results.

I was blown away.

Then I was ashamed!

I decided then and there that before I even considered thinking about a new(er) camera I darn well better learn to use mine right!

Thus this photo challenge was born!

And here is why the above photo is my favourite.  It was taken for day 4 of the challenge - Something Green - early on and what I loved (and mentioned in that post) was that this was the first time I switched over to manual mode and went at it.  Before I lived in Aperture Priority Mode (AV on my camera) and thought I was doing well - figured I had a good grasp on what I was doing and that the only way to improve was to, obviously, buy a newer, better camera.

But this photo changed all that.  This picture came off the camera almost entirely as you see it - a slight tweak to enhance just the green of the stone and a slight contrast change and voila!

So with this photo I gained some serious confidence....and serious repentance!

:P

;)

I have learned so, sooo much through this challenge - MUCH more then I anticipated!!! I gained knowledge and confidence.  I certainly don't nail every photo I take, and yes I still often take 50 or more photos to end up with that one 'perfect' shot - but I actually understand my camera and how to technically take a good photo!

I am really going to miss this photo challenge - I loved the motivation!  I think I may follow a few other bloggers with the idea for a weekly photo post....hmmm...will have to think on it or link up to one.

So...I think that sums up the last 30 days for me, in regards to this challenge.  But I have one last surprise for the three bloggers who ventured along with me.

I have gone back through all of your photos and picked the ones I thought were your best!  And for each of your I had a hard time narrowing down to one.  So, I have picked the one I think was your best, in my opinion....so take it as you will! ;)  And two runner up photos...because...well I just couldn't narrow it down more then that!

I encourage you ladies to keep at it and we can all decide together if you like, to keep up on the one a week idea - I know Kendra at These are a few of my favourite things - is thinking about it so I think it's a good idea!

You have each done a splendid job and should be proud of how you've grown in this!!

So posting these in order of who joined this challenge:

Well that wraps up the challenge - but I found this quote and thought it a fitting conclusion for the challenge.

Never lose an opportunity for seeing anything that is beautiful;
For beauty is God's handwriting--a wayside sacrament.
Welcome it in every fair face, in every fair sky, in every fair flower,
And thank God for it as a cup of His blessing.

30 Day Photo Challenge - Day 29 - Black and White

I had fun today...no...that's an understatement...I had A LOT of fun today!!  Though I was disappointed that the sun did not shine, it was still lovely outside and my being sick has decided to morph itself into a mild cold - that's okay, I can handle that!

So we took a quite family day.  We had a delicious breakfast, complete with what my hubby is calling, "Good, Fried Eggs"....*groan*, reading the Easter story and talking with the girls about the importance of today.  After some more Easter celebrating and puttering about the house, we decided to talk a little walk.

Of course I grabbed the camera!

;)

First stop on our walk- our barn.  My black and white pic of the day....though I love just about all that I'm posting today....I'm kinda realizing just how much I adore black and white photography!!

Leaving the 'homestead', we meander down the road...

Crisp and cool, it smelled of Spring....and cow manure....it was....bliss!

;)

Stopping again to revisit my 'lady' friends!  Still as sweet as ever!

I snagged this next photo - it turned out gorgeous but I want to give a shout out to my sister-in-law, Stephanie - she had wanted to stop to take a picture of these horses for the Eyes day (day 14) of the challenge but she got visiting too long here and her little guy was all to ready to go home so I think she did not have the time to stop to get a photo of these gals.  So here's one for you Steph - that is, until we go walking next time you are here!

But these weren't the only beautiful 'creatures' I had the pleasure of photographing today...no, as par for the course I couldn't leave you without some sweet shots of my littles!

;)

So it was a lovely day - and after returning home, enjoying a yummy supper - we tore the house apart!  For tomorrow we...as in...my hubby and his brother-in-law are sanding our floors!! Oh JOY!! More on that another time!!

And how sad - only ONE more day of this challenge! :(  I'm sure going to miss it!  I'm going to miss the motivation, the inspiration and the learning process!

But...I did NOT forget that there are 31 days this month...oh no!  I'll be asking one final challenge from you for the 31st....but you'll have to wait until tomorrow to find out what it is!

30 Day Photo Challenge - Day 27 - From a Distance

The road home.  It leads to our farm house and it leads us out to the rest of the world.  I look down it when I walk out to get the mail and see if anyone is coming our way.  I love how is meanders about and how it is adorn with trees that will soon be budding new leaves.  I love walking it and I look forward to the days when our children bike along it.  I love the potholes...just not so much in our old car.  I love that it is gravel and the sounds of the tires as they travel along it.  Oh the road home,  a simple blessing but a blessing indeed!

Oh and another picture...because I think it fit the bill but it was also an example of a previous 'lesson'; from a low angle.  (I posted it because my mother-in-law had a similar idea...looking UP at our houses - seeing it from a different perspective!  But I think I like hers more!)

And yes, these pictures are a day late...I may be off now - I will try to get today's actual challenge done for today - but I'm not feeling well.  A bit of a cold meets the flu - and though my hubby was so great to take yesterday off to watch the children and let me rest - I'm on my own today.  And of course all I want to do is crawl into bed - but alas the baby has other ideas and has decided to take a strike from nap time today! :/   Oh well - the weekend is just around the corner.....

30 Day Photo Challenge - Day 26 - Close-Up

This necklace was a gift from my sister a few years ago.  She laughed when I opened it because she figured out - after buying it for me - that she believed it to be a gift that was suppose to be given between two people in love.  She offered to exchange it for another one.

Obviously I did not exchange it - I love it!  And I think of her every time I put it on.  It jingles, like it has a bell on it, so my day is just a little more musical whenever I wear it!  And we all know how much I love music, so does she!

My sister lives on the other side of the country and we don't see each other often, so I enjoy having this little memento of her.  A reminder of two people in love - sisters! ♥

30 Day Photo Challenge - Day 25 - Something Pink

There were so many choices on this one for me.  Being the momma of two sweet girls, and a fan of this colour myself - something pink was not hard to come by....deciding what something pink to photograph...that was a much more challenging task!

So once again - I'm double posting pictures.

The fist one, I found, fit well with the overall feeling of my 30 Day collection.  The something pink is subtle here - it's the scarf, given to me by my hubby a few years ago.  I had hoped to set this photo against a background of pink sky but the sunset was not as co-operative as I had anticipated.

My second photo is more...pinktastic!

;)

I took a moment...and just a moment, mind you, and walking from my kitchen to my living room came back with as many pink items as I could manage.  Oh there were more...many more but this was all I gathered in that time for my second photo.

I find this picture very fun!

I see that this colour has two wonderful sides.  The soft, sweet side and the fun, fantastic side!  I think that's partially why I like it so much!

Side note here - in five more clicks of my camera and I'll be rolling over for a third time - that means 30 000 photos in two years!  And I'm just now getting the hang of it all?!?

30 Day Photo Challenge - Day 24 - Animal

These sweet creatures belong to our neighbours.  Two beautiful horses that we pass every time we leave and come home.  They are not only just lovely but super sweet natured too!  Our girls adore them and well, I think I'm pretty smitten too!

And because they are just about the most photogenic ladies I have ever met, here's a couple more photos.

30 Day Photo Challenge - Day 21 - Faceless Self-Portrait

This is how you'll find me most mornings between 5:00 and 6:00 am.

No; not every morning and some weeks, not as often as I would like...but this is the corner of my home, where I purpose to set aside time to meet with our Lord. It is here where I pray, think...refocus, pray some more...stop my wandering mind to pray again.  I read from His word; I write down thoughts, ponder what lies before me, wave goodbye to my hubby as he goes off to work, watch the sun rise and greet my kids as they awake for the day.

Satisfy us in the morning with Your steadfast love,
that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

30 Day Photo Challenge - Day 20 - Bokeh

I found my bokeh happy place HERE - I think it's the best description, easy and straight forward and she includes a how to do it, plus some visual examples.  Sorry folks for not finding this yesterday - I'm sure it would have been helpful.  Would have helped me too...had I look it up before I did my bokeh photo shoot!

:P

*sigh*
Live and learn!

But, what I did learn is that I'm just a bokeh fan from the get-go!  Seems that many of my favourite shots (or at least the ones I try to take) fall into the bokeh category.  I didn't know this...because up until a week or so ago...I didn't know the term bokeh existed...in fact...when I first saw this on the list for the challenge I thought it was a typo! ha!

For today, I settled on messing about with the multi-lights bokeh effect - and I'll say this, today's challenge was extremely rewarding, creatively draining and incredibly educational.  Still so much more to learn and become comfortable with but I am starting to finally grasp many of the aspects of shooting manually with my camera.

Okay...so enough rambling...here is today's challenge;

I like it and I think I feel a series looming...thinking, new decor for our bedroom!?!

Also, because I was having a lot of fun...and had it in my mind to try.  I did a couple of shots to try to master, shaped bokeh...ummm...that proved a tad more challenging..and if I hadn't been doing about a million other things today...I might have had more time to enjoy it and play around a bit more.  But that being said, I'm satisfied with what I came up with.

Also, mostly because I was surprised to discover this, that one of my favourite forms of posting pictures for my blog here falls into the bokeh category..(so I'm starting to think just about 90% of my photos do, but now I have a name for my blurred background photos! haha!)  I'm including this picture...or pictures...depends on how you want to look at it.

Yup, that's right - in case you missed it, my baby girl is four years old today!  Our Spring baby!  Who had a fun...though snowy cold, day.  She requested carrot cake for her Birthday...because she had never had it before!  She spent the day playing, watching movies, crafting and being her silly, sweet, happy, precious blessing, self!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CATHERINE!!

30 Day Photo Challenge - Day 17 - Technology

A generation goes, and a generation comes,
but the earth remains forever.

The sun rises, and the sun goes down,
and hastens to the place where it rises.

The wind blows to the south
and goes around to the north;
around and around goes the wind,
and on its circuits the wind returns.

All streams run to the sea,
but the sea is not full;
to the place where the streams flow,
there they flow again.

 All things are full of weariness;
a man cannot utter it;
the eye is not satisfied with seeing,
nor the ear filled with hearing.

What has been is what will be,
and what has been done is what will be done,
and there is nothing new under the sun.

Is there a thing of which it is said,
“See, this is new”?
It has been already
in the ages before us.

There is no remembrance of former things,
nor will there be any remembrance
of later things yet to be
among those who come after.

30 Day Photo Challenge - Day 16 - Long Exposure

*Phew* glad that is over!  What a learning curve today turned out to be!  I had wanted to get the hang of this long exposure thing without resorting to a night shot.  Don't get me wrong, those are great and I really like the effect - (thinking I'll have fun with this in the warmer months - thinking, kids and sparklers!?!?) BUT for me, I want this challenge to really challenge me.  Making me step outside the familiar and try different things that I wouldn't necessarily have tried before.

So on our way to visit my husband's brother and his (VERY pregnant wife...any day now!!!)  I remembered this waterfall just at the end of our road.  It's a little one but so very pretty - especially in the summer!!

Anyways, here is where the learning curve began...for I have learned, long exposure photos are very sensitive to light - too little or in the case for me today - too much!!  I ended up with MANY severely overexposed photos - as in solid white shots?!!?  Not very interesting for you all to gander at!

So I abandoned the waterfall and off we went to have our visit.  But on the way home, the waterfall had not escaped my mind and with the sun setting, hubby and the kids got out at home and I returned to the water.  Tripod and zoom lens in hand I was set.

But, it was cold, let me tell you!! C.O.L.D!  So I froze my hands and one big toe in order to bring you this lovely shot! I hope you like it!  I'm pretty happy that I got the effect I was after.

And so again I am thankful for this challenge, for it making me push my limits and cause me to try, try again!  I hope you who are participating are still going strong, learning and enjoying this and I hope those of you who are still viewing along, are taking pleasure in the fruits of our labour!

30 Day Photo Challenge - Day 15 - Silhouette

Today's challenge was interesting.  So far it was my least inspiring day but I did learned a bit, had some fun with the girls and in the end - I am content with the result.

Half way through this 30 day challenge and I am really enjoying the overall experience.  Like I said today was not as inspiring as I had thought...but maybe I'm just tired...or glad it's the weekend.  But I love all that I am learning about my camera, how to use it better and becoming much more familiar with it.  I love the encouragement to pull it out, even for just a few brief moments each day, to photograph the everyday.  I am also really enjoying what others are doing as they take part in this photography challenge!!  What do you think, this just might have to become an annual thing...?!?!

30 Day Photo Challenge - Day 12 - Sunset

Ah, as I feared...as has most days have been...for weeks now...the sky...she was a gray, today!  And though, as we sat down for supper the clouds parted and the sun shone in, by the time the day was ending, the clouds were back again.

But I did manage to find a peek of colour, a dusting on the clouds before the sun sunk low, away for the night.

That is the beauty of this challenge - for me at least - is that I am looking more now.  Looking differently and with purpose.  I never would have considered a sunset shot on a day like today.  To the point, I had even considered switching out today for another day.  But I decided to let the day be and go with what came.  My mother-in-law got a lovely shot, had I changed today's subject would she have noticed as much?  I know I wouldn't have barely glanced at this dusting of pink or thought what a lovely scene it could be.  Nor would my husband and I have dawned our boots and trucked though the snow to see what we could see.  Taking a gander through the barns, discovering lost treasure in the melting snow, being startled by semi camouflaged cats and enjoying the cool air, fragrant with the smells of wet earth and the sounds of geese returning.

This challenge is marching along and soon Spring will be upon us! So keep on, keeping on!

30 Day Photo Challenge - Day 10 - Childhood Memory

I'm going to be really busy today, we're leaving soon for church...already running late due to the time change...and I won't be back until much later.  I have lots of childhood memories that I could have thought about, focused on and used for my photo - but this simple toy, sitting in my living room caught my attention for today's challenge.

Do you remember it?  If you are a child of the 70's/80's then I'm sure you do!  I had this when I was little and loved it...I still do!  What I also love about it, is that every child that enters my home is drawn to it.  It's simple, brightly coloured, takes no batteries and opens up the world of imagination for endless hours of play!

So move over LeapFrog, Baby Einstein and iPads with your toddler apps - the classics are still; classic!

Okay, well gotta run - I can't wait to see all the other childhood memories captured on digital 'film'!

Just another blast from the
past for your viewing enjoyment!

*Oh and did you notice - I was a tad sneaky yesterday - my someone you love photo, just so happen to include all four of my most loved people....ooohhh sneaky, sneaky! hehe!
