Rock On - DIY Recovered Rocker

A week ago I snagged this lovely glider rocker for a mere $40!! Complete with foot stool!!  I was very happy!! I have wanted one for years!  Now, I do actually have one - but it's older, wood, without a foot stool and it's in Joe's room.  So when I saw this gem, I was all over it!

I wanted to get one for when our fourth little arrives.  Dave still snuggles Joe each night in the rocker we currently have - (also a second hand find...maaany years ago now!) and so I knew I couldn't steal his!
Also the one in Joseph's room is natural wood...and well...I prefer white.  I love white trim, white cupboards, white cribs, white appliances - it's just my go to 'colour' for these types of things.  So when my eyes befell this $40 glider I knew I had to have it....the only issue...the fabric!

So...there's nothing wrong with teddy bears...but they just aren't me...and they certainly were out of place in my living room!  And low, I had already Pinned a tutorial of sort on recovering one of these babies!

The tutorial I followed was more of a guideline - my kind of project - she told me what I needed and the rough idea of how to do it.  No real measuring, just grab yourself three meters of fabric and trace the cushions, giving you your pattern, sew, flip, done!

Or something along those lines...at least that's what I did!

It was pretty simple and only took me a few hours...but that's with ample coffee breaks, chats with my hubby and kids - who were all home due to inclement weather - and other distractions! But I got her done, I did and I love it!!

And hubby and my boy helped me a bit too!

They removed and reassembled the foot rest so I could recover it.  Adorableness, that little man of mine, getting his hands on some of daddy's tools for the first time!! He was all over 'helping'!!

He cried when Dave had to eventually take the screw driver away!!
And so, I now have a nice rocker all set up in the living room - finally something ready for this little one.  I had originally thought to put it in our bedroom - but that is where I just, groggily, nurse my babies in the wee hours - but the living room is where I can snuggle them all the day long and be with my other littles too.
So the living room is the new home for this treasure!

And...with it set up and ready, I'm itching to get more things done and prepared for the coming of our newest addition!  You'd think with this being baby number four, we'd be more prepared...but we're not.  I still have to sort through clothes, make space in our room, get a crib or something for this little one to sleep in and finalize on some names!

I do have some time yet - but I've been so crazy with nesting already...it's kinda driving me crazy...and tiring me out...but I want to and need to get some things done!  My creative juices are a flowing lately and I'm enjoying the time I can put into these various projects.

I think it's partly because when Joe was born a year and a half ago - we had JUST moved in and nothing, and I mean nothing, was settled in the house!! It was kinda crazy!! We still had oodles of boxes to unpack, rooms to paint, things to sort though and well it was just a tad un-nerving!

So this time around, we will have been here just over two years and it feels more and more like home!  It's all coming together and order is finally setting in!  Dave and I aren't extremely organized people, it takes a lot of work for us to get there....a lot of God work!! But He has been changing us over the years - this blog can attest to that!! And I love how things feel when the house, and thus our belonging are in place!  So I hope to putter away at that, over the coming months and be settled and ready for the arrival of this sweet blessing.

And because I'm a fair momma...I didn't want my other favourite chair to feel out of place - I bought her, her own new pillow!

I'm thoughtful like that!!

Soaked in Love

Well it's true - you are all sweet to me, my friends!

It's Valentine's day again, not a big 'holiday' around here - I did just have my birthday and hubby and I are not much for it all together! We're those sickly sweet people that "keep Valentine's Day all year long!" lol!! It's true though!  And so with not having to focus on us for this particular day of love we get to focus more on others!

Including these two little sweeties....

It was the girls first Valentine's day at school - well...actually they had their day on Thursday as Friday is a PA day and so they are not in school.  And since they only attend three days a week, this past Wednesday my little ladies and I were hard at work making cookies for their class mates!

I made the sugar cookie dough the night before...because this momma only has so much patience and making dough AND all the other bits to doing cookies was just going to be too much!  And anyways, the rolling and decorating parts are more fun!
So we got to work on somewhere around five dozen cookies...I lost count after the fourth tray or so...my gals did great and were pretty good helpers!  Especially when it came to mixing the icing!

It was a mixed day of love for me....the day we made the cookies also marked two years since my dad passed away.

I couldn't have been more thankful for the sunshine that day!  Last year was cold and miserable out...one of those days where it's not fully winter and only the touches of melted and messiness of Spring coming...it was all around terrible!

But this year was a bit different....It was such a jumble of family fun and missing my dad!  I think it had something to do with the time passing...it being two full years now and the healing that takes place in that time.  I found that I wanted to actually remember more this year...to look at the photos...and think about him.

If you've never lost someone close to you then this might not make sense...but it takes time....time to move though and sort out all the feelings associated with loss!  The first year was filled with so many monumental hurts....so many times when you encounter those 'first times' with out....so many moments when it hits you hard, real hard, that someone you love is not there...and not going to be....

I found this second year to be more of one where I just focused on what was...forgetting the loss and moving through and becoming accustomed to the new normal....and as the anniversary of his passing came....a sense of acceptance settled in....

....not an "I'm okay with this" kind of acceptance but more of..."I realize that this is...what it is..."

As my day progressed I came to want to remember him more.  It hurt less to talk about him, to remember him and thoughts of celebrating him began to form in my mind....

It's as if the fog of mourning has lifted...and I begin to see his smile, instead of holding on to the pain.  I begin to hear his laugh and not long for the time I get to see him...that never comes.  I begin to want to share more with my children, instead of pretending his death never happened...

I begin to want to celebrate his life, his legacy and his love!

I took time, between cookies baking, cooling and icing making to look through photos, to throw snappy 'dad style' comebacks at my hubby and to remember him and all he gave me.  And I took the time to soak in all that the day brought...
I soaked in the time with my husband and children.
I soaked in the sunshine.
I soaked in the memories.
I soaked in the sugary sweets that littered my kitchen.
I soaked in my dad's smile.
I soaked in 'huggies' from my baby boy.
I soaked in the moments.
I soaked in the love.

And at the end of it all, the best place to soak in all I need - is in His word!  In His comfort, care and provision.  To look at all the moments of my life....the good...the bad...the ugly...the sad...the joys...the lows....the blessings....the wonder....the moments that glow....

To look to my God and know that His love is always there, sweeter then any Valentine!

But the steadfast love of the Lord is from
everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him,
and his righteousness to children's children,
to those who keep his covenant
and remember to do his commandments.
The Lord has established his throne in the heavens,
and his kingdom rules over all.

Bless the Lord, O you his angels,
you mighty ones who do his word,
obeying the voice of his word!
Bless the Lord, all his hosts,
his ministers, who do his will!
Bless the Lord, all his works,
in all places of his dominion.
Bless the Lord, O my soul!

So It Happened Again...

...I got older!

It seems to be an annual thing!

So yes, I had my birthday this past Monday.  I'm not big on birthdays, not because I don't like to 'age' - because you know, they say birthdays are good for you, the more you have the longer you live!

So yes, well my mom was never big on birthdays when I was growing up - I mean having three kids with deep winter Birthdays - what ARE you to do with them??  And so I just never got used to the idea of parties, or big shin-digs or what have you!

But my hubby - he was gooood this year!  On.his.game!!  Because....as terrible as it may sound....I like....no, I LOVE to shop!!!

I do!

It's true!!

It's taking me a number of years to realize this - but you know those questions where they say things like, "What is your dream weekend get away?" or "You find a $100, what would you do?"  Well...yeah....I tend to always pick shopping!

And I think if you met me...you'd be surprised at that!

But it's true!  Now, I don't shop often...rarely in fact...and I have to be in the right mood to do it - but when I do - oh I do!!!  I'm an all day event shopping kind of girl!! And if there be bargains, well!

SOOoooo for my birthday this year, my dear hubby did not invite people over but instead, took the day off, so I could go with my BFF and go SHOPPING!!!!

How fun!

He set the budget but I had free limit of time!

So on the Friday before my birthday, my BFF and I took off on an all day shopping excursion! And oh we had fun!  And the sales people! THE SALES!!!! We must have hit the best sales weekend around because EVERYWHERE we went there were incredible deals!!

God was blessing my birthday fun - it sure seemed like!

So staying in budget I scored some great things - like, SHOES!!!

Both pairs were only $35 WITH TAX!!!!

I got some other goodies too, candles, hand soaps, nursing bra, and a snazzy dress shirt for my hubby!  (cause he was so good to me to let me go all day!) ALL this for well under $90!!!

It was great!

Now I just have to wait for these mounds of snow to melt and Spring to come so I can dawn these shoes and head on out!

And so my birthday actually stretched over the whole weekend - which was fun!  We did simple, family things and it was lovely!! The weather on my actual Birthday - was monumental!! I mean, for all the years I've been around it has always, and I mean always, been terrible!! Ice storm, snow storm, horrible weather!! But this year - there was sunshine!! Glorious, lovely sunshine!! And crazy mild temperatures!!  It even got above zero, which is unheard of for my day!!  And so, partially because I'm crazy and partially because when the sun is shining, I feel like I can take on the world, my hubby and I had the notion to re-arrange the kitchen!  So we tore it apart and spent the day, re-organizing it!

And it's so much better now!

My poor kitchen, it's not only the 'heart of the home' but the major work horse of it too!

It's the kitchen, the eating area, the entrance way, basement access point (which we use all day in the winter to load wood into our furnace) pantry entrance and second staircase entry point!  Phew - there's a lot that happens here!  Thankfully it's a big room - but not quite so big once you load all these others into it!

So anyways, we condensed and streamlined the 'mudroom' part of it.  Removed a large counter/cabinet from the pantry and turned it into an island/peninsula to gain on counter space and to help define the kitchen prep area from the eating, entry way area and well the whole thing is just coming together nicely!

But of course...this means I will have to paint!

OH and what did Kaitlin do for her birthday last year, you ask??  Well, yes, remember if you will...I painted my kitchen! HA!!!  And no...*sheepish grin*...NOT the colour it is right now...because since my last birthday I painted my kitchen again!  I'm terrible!!  But I don't plan on actually changing the colour...at least not much - so it should be a quick job - mostly just covering up spots that were damaged when we took down shelves and coat hooks to re-arrange.

So apparently getting older is an annual thing but so is re-doing my kitchen!!

Hopefully I'll get it right this time and can live with it!  That is...until we build a mud room!

And so my day was rounded out quite nicely with a practically gourmet meal made by my hubby!! Cheesy Havarti mashed potatoes, steamed Brussels sprouts and a perfectly done butter garlic, strip loin steak!!  Finished off with a homemade "Ah Caramel" inspired cake!!

He's good to me, that man!

I'm blessed with another year under my belt, gaining some wisdom, humility and even a few wrinkles!  I look forward to the coming one - with each day, the time spent with those I love, for adventures that await and for all God has planned for me!

Surely goodness and mercy
shall follow me all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in
the house of the Lord forever.
Psalm 23:6
