October Photo Challenge - Day 31 - Whatever You Please

After a big day out, fun with cousins, lack of a nap, and a drive in the van, my boy was beat and fell fast asleep!

.

And after 31 days of photo challenge adventuring - I feel pretty much the same way!!  I'm beat!!

This was fun but I found this challenge less inspiring then my first photo challenge, last year.  I found this one harder to be artistic with the word prompts and not just capture a documentation of the word for the day.  The last challenge I found to be more technical, which was great, but also because of that it seemed to lend it's self easier for creative images.

At least, that's my take away from this year's challenge.

Over all, I thought it was still a good exercise to expand my skills as a photographer, both technically and artistically.  I also like how these challenges cause me to open my eyes more, to take the time to notice things that I might other wise pass by if I wasn't really looking.

I don't mean that one should 'live behind the lens', for life is more then the captured moments but it's good to slow down, now and again, and really just; see!

Congratulations and well done to everyone who participated - whether you did all, some or just a few I hope you learned a little something....and if nothing else, had a bit of fun!! .

October Photo Challenge - Day 30 - Clothes

Ah clothes.  Well, you all know me...and the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear the word clothes, is laundry!

.

Funny eh, my distain for laundry yet it makes it's way into both this year and last year's photo challenges. (see here for last year's day six post)

And it's not that I have any problem cleaning it.  Oh no! It's just the chore of sorting it, folding it and putting it all away...that's where it always gets me!

So yes, probably at any given day, you'll find a pile of laundry, like the one above, in my house.  But hey, at least it's clean!

Tomorrow - Day 31 - last day! - WHATEVER YOU PLEASE

October Photo Challenge - Day 29 - Moon

Okay, so I'm posting another 'cheater' post - the clouds here are too thick tonight and have been pretty much all day.  I did venture out to try to see if there was any sign of the moon but alas to no prevail.  So I am posting a couple of photos that I took earlier in the month.

.

I was out one morning...can't remember why exactly...but I looked up and saw the half moon showing it's self in the early light of the day.  It was just lovely!

.

And sorry to call these last two posts 'cheater' posts - but for me, the goal was to take each photo on the day of the prompt but I know that's not how everyone worked the challenge and that's fine!  But I wanted to stretch myself in this way.

Only two days left of our challenge!  Hang in there!!

October Photo Challenge - Day 28 - Black and White

So...I'm doing it again...sneaking in a post a day later then it states. I was sick again but I'm starting to feel better.  But, I was so down and out, that this time I didn't even pick up the camera to snap a shot, so I don't have a photo from yesterday (which is suppose to be today....) to post.  What I do have is a little collection of black and white photos I took a while ago to record some baby bits of my youngest gal.

I was just so enamored with her feet one day and wanted to capture those before they got any bigger...and while doing so I also captured a couple more shots of her sweet, chubby, babyness.

.
Like her elbow creases, wrist creases and sweet baby fingers.

.

And her toes...again!!  But this time all scrunched up and looking like little peas....dangerously edible!

.

And elbow dimples!!!

.
Oh baby bits! I love them!! I wanted to get more...like her cinnamon bun belly button, her ears, which I used to think were tiny...but lately they look GIANT!  Her sweet button nose and the thigh rolls - LOVE those!!  But I haven't captured them on film.......not, yet!

October Photo Challenge - Day 26 - Listening to

 Music! Of course!!

.

If you know me at all, then you probably know that I just can't live without music!!  What's on my playlist these days?

Here are a few favourites:

  • Kim Walker-Smith - particularly her "Still Believe" album...the whole thing is pretty darn amazing!!
  • Kim Walker-Smith and Skyler Smith (yes, her again and her hubby) their "Home" cd!!!
  • Ellie Holcomb - a newer one for me - but LOVE her style...and having a banjo involved never hurts!
  • Sandra McCracken - she's got a plethora of good ones.
  • "Oceans" by Hillsong UNITED - but who doesn't love this song?!?!
  • Shaylee Simeone - another new artist for me, but feeling the groove from this gal already!
  • Christa Wells - enjoying her songs, "Feed Your Soul", "This Thing Is Not Going to Break You", "Shine", and "The Way That You Love Me".
  • Jamie Grace her "One Song At A Time" album - in the van for my big gals - they love her music and I find it pretty catchy too!
  • Phil Joel's album "The Deliberate People" - the lyrics are fantastic!

Just a few of the musicians that are filling my ears and my soul these days!

What are you listening to??

October Photo Challenge - Day 25 - Shadow

.

The above photo I captured at the day's end.  It had been one of those looong dreary days.  Over cast, grey, rain...with the occasional peek of sunshine to get your hopes up...but then before you knew it, the sun was gone again!  I thought, "Today's going to be a rough go for 'shadow'."  But just as we sat down to supper the sun came out in all it's glory!!

So, once supper was finished, I grabbed my ol' pal and we headed out to see what we could see!  And so I snagged that photo of me and my 'pal'.

But I do have another photo for you - one I took, in one of my favourite places - back to the bathroom I went.  Because, as I said, it was a long, grey day, so what better way to spend a while but soaking in my tub!  And here in the bathroom is a shadow I often admire and think quite neat...

.

This shadow is cast by the funky 'chandelier' I have hanging over the tub.  It's a light that we brought with us from our last house.  It used to hang in the kitchen there but it quickly found a home in the bathroom here.  And so you can see it and see just how fantastic this shadow really is, here's another photo;

I don't know if that first picture lets you see that the shadow cast fills the whole wall - but you can certainly see that there!  (and take no note of the missing bulb shadow...)  I think one of these days I'm going to do something fun with that light fixture...but for now, it's an old friend that lights my relax time and cast these crazy, fun shadows!

I had taken the second photo first - because I thought the sun was a goner for the day and I had a hard time picking which one I liked best....so it was decided but I find both pictures quite interesting...if I do say so myself! HA! ;)  So you can let me know what you think! Either way...I thought today wasn't going to be nearly as fun as it turned out to be...shadows, who knew?!?

October Photo Challenge - Day 24 - Dinnertime

Our baby gal turned five months old the other day and I have both wanted and not wanted to introduce food to her.  But for the past month, she has been eyeing up our meals, taking swipes at our forks, cups and plates and she watches us intently, mimicking our munching, while we are eating.  So when I saw the prompt for today...I figured, what better day to start her on some food of her own.

So did she like it??

 .

 You bet she did!!!

Oh she was more than eager! Dave was having a hard time keeping up with her and she barely let her eyes wander from the spoon!

.

She happily scarfed down the little bowl of rice cereal that we had prepared for her.  And when daddy just wasn't fast enough, Alice figured she'd lend him a hand!

.

I can't believe this little gal is already five months!! She's growing up waaay faster then I could have imagined!!  And I think, having the three older siblings around, she's progressing faster then my other kiddos ever did!  I can see that she wants to go, to chase after them and get involved with whatever it is they are up to!  It's just unbelievable and these precious baby moments, *sigh* fly by too quickly!!

.

And so that was the highlight of our dinnertime tonight - Alice's first food! Crazy!!  And thank you all for your concerns!  Dave and Joseph are doing much better!!  I think we'll take the next couple of days for some R and R (as we might have been out all day today...in public...shopping, shhhh! Don't tell!! *wink* heheheeh) and I think, after some much deserved down time, we will all be well by Monday...I pray!

October Photo Challenge - Day 23 - The View From Here

Today's prompt...well, it's a lot of the reason why we moved here...the views from here, God glorifying, amazingly, breathtaking!!  Not every view every day....but a lot of the time...and if you've been reading my blog at all for the last two and a half years, you've seen many of those views!

But one I haven't really shown you very often, is today's choice photo.

 .
That is the view from my kitchen window.  It's what I gaze upon as I do the dishes and prepare our meals.  I love it!! We actually, shortly after moving in, rearranged the kitchen cupboards so that the sink could sit smack-dab in front of this window.

.
I haven't often photographed this shot because...well, the window here is actually cracked.... and usually pretty dirty...but hubby was kind enough to open it for me (because I can't quite reach it!) so I could capture this view on 'film'.

And as I was going through my photos I found a few more gems to show you...just a few pictures of some views I captured recently, ones I don't always or often share from their respective angles.

Like our front door.  One early morning, as we were loading the kids in the van to take them to school, I looked back and saw the sun lighting up the front of the house.  I love coming home to this place and though we haven't put much work into the outside, I find our little porch welcoming and inviting.

.
And here, the next shot....well, you've seen this view featured here.. a LOT!!  It's of the valley behind the house.  Usually I go outside and snap my pictures from the side of the house.  But it's the view, directly behind the house, that can only be seen through two windows, one of which I positioned (selfish me!) my drafting table in front of, that I love so dearly!  (the second window is in the bathroom - see yesterday's post for that window...though you can't see out it in that shot...but from the...uh throne....it's an amazing view!!!!)

.
I love this valley view.  I love to sit here and just marvel at the beauty that is out there....marvel at God's amazing artistry...as I try to muster up my own creative juices!

 .
And finally, a sunset.  Because I haven't shown you nearly enough of these, now have I?!?! ;) hahah!! They never cease to amaze me!!  I want to paint one but I can't settle on which picture to use....and if I wanted to paint from life...well I'd just end up sitter there watching it unfold in front of me...and never put paint to canvas! hahah!

.

And so...those are some of the views from here...some of my favourites, that's for sure!! I find that the camera doesn't quite capture God's handy work...but I try!!  I feel immensely blessed to be able to enjoy these sights...but I must remember, this earth is temporary...and heaven...well, the views from there....wow!

October Photo Challenge - Day 22 - A Favourite Place

*siiiigh*

.
.
Yes, I'm one of those people...one of those bath people!

I hear that a lot - "Oh, I'm not a bath person!"  but phooey I say - if you are not a bath person, it's because you are doing it all wrong!  You see, a bath is not about getting clean...so no, I'm not soaking in my own filth (I hear that a lot too!)  Showers are for getting clean.  But for me, the bath is an escape.  A place of rest, relaxation and rejuvenation.....and to warm up on those crazy cold days...!

I love my bathtub!! Seriously - it's crazy deep and super long!! And we got it for a steal!!!  I'm not a whirlpool jet person and I'm not a spa person.  I'm just a lady who loves the tub!

Yes, taking a bath, dear friends, (and here you either are with me or against me) is a full on event!  It's solitude time, bubbles time, grab a drink, a snack (preferable of the chocolate variety), a real good book and sink on in, time.   Sink on in, beneath the warmth, letting the waters flow around you, envelope you and ...and letting the bubbles...hide you! *wink!* hahah!!

Grab your good read, sip you drink, close out the world and disappear into tub land....for a good long while!  And don't resurface until you are a wrinkled prune!

And well...if you see all of that as just plain silly, then that's fine with me - keep your showers but I'll be soaking away the coming long winter nights....and I won't be saving you any chocolate!

October Photo Challenge - Day 21 - Calm

Ironically (and no, I don't believe in irony...unless you are referring to God's sense of humour on occasion!)  today's word prompt was very timely.

Today was one of those super fall feeling days.  The howling wind, rains pouring down, the sky grey and dreary and I hunkered down indoors, warm and sung.  Well...not before having to go out this morning for the ladies bible study that I am apart of.  Okay, so how does calm fit so timely?

.
Well, in the last couple of days, my husband was super sick, then the breaks went on our van, our neighbour came to pump up the slow leaking tire on our car so we could drive the girls to school Monday, (hubby's compressor is lent out at the moment), I took the girls to school, came home then followed hubby while he drove the somewhat able to break van to the mechanics, but there wasn't enough time to make it there and get to my husband's (last minute) doctor appointment, so we dropped it (the van) off at the kid's school until we could come back, took hub to the Dr., got a prescription for his Strep A condition, spent a half hour in Wal-Mart to fill the script, (never a good idea to meander in that place....never!), got the van, dropped it off, came home, ate lunch, went back to pick up the girls.  Then last night, the baby and Joe were up various times for various reasons, then Joe woke up today, not himself...we clued in on that when our usually up at 5:00/5:30am little man was still in bed at 7:00!  Then he didn't eat much today, he ended up with a fever of 100 degrees, he took a nap and I think the fever broke! He's been resting and lethargic all afternoon!  During nap time, Hubby decided to fix a hole in the living room ceiling (oh there's a good story on that, I'll fill you in another day!) and so the living room is all torn apart and basically the house is in shambles! ....and so it's homemade pita pizzas and a movie tonight - because it's also a pseudo Friday here as the girls are off school for the next five days!

.
So today's word was calm.  My picture for today (the first one above) was taken this afternoon - between bible study and picking the girls up from school.  I think it reflects calm nicely, but I also think it is a reflection of my heart these last few days.  The 'storm' is raging around us, oh, nothing major, these things happen and over all things are well (the van is fixed and the men folk will be okay) but it's still 'blustery' out.  But my heart is calm.  It's a warm cup of tea, soft candle light, sweet smells, and a delicious bite of pumpkin cookie (okay, not literally! lol!) while the winds howl around us.

But this calmness is not of my own.  No, it's from the comforting words of my husband, the wise counsel of friends (who have taught us the importance of an emergency fund for just such an occasion), from truths hidden in my heart, and more then anything, the calm in the storms of life, come from our Lord!

.
Even though I wonder at why He allows these things to come, that often it feels like, when it rains it pours, I know that He is in control!  My God loves us and cares for us and I know I can rest in that.  That is what calm truly looks like!

October Photo Challenge - Day 20 - 4 O'Clock

.
Ah 4'Oclock, that busy, chatty, organized chaosy, supper readying, family filled time of day!!  I really wanted to take a shot of the going ons in our house at this hour...but in the end I snapped a shot of the clock...the only thing that stands still, even if it's only for a minute, during that hour!

I had to laugh, as Bevy posted a similar image and post!  Her feelings differ slightly then mine but I imagine our households feel very much the same during this time of day.  Though most days, my hubby would be coming in the door with the older two gals - now, since he is on parental leave, either one of us is coming in or all of us - as he and I will often go pick the girls up from school together these days.

Wow - day 20 today people!! Only eleven days left!!  Hang in there, the time will fly by!

October Photo Challenge - Day 19 - Letters

I don't always love the English language but I do love these 26 letters and all that they can do!

.
And as I was walking around my house, deciding what to take a picture of, I suddenly realized all the letters and words that I use in decorating my home!  The letter pictured above are from a stamp set that my hubby got me a couple of years ago.  I've broken them out a few times for helping to create a new piece of art...but I believe this is the first time that they were the art!

October Photo Challenge - Day 18 - Made You Smile Today

...okay so first off...apparently photos of bananas in black and white...do not make people smile...or even comment for that matter - guessing those were not a hit among my readers eh?! Ah well, can't win 'em all! But I liked it...at least a whole lot more then I like to eat them!

Anywho....moving along....today's prompt...well that was hard because a lot of things made me smile today!!  But this moment, captured at a birthday party this afternoon, certainly had me grinning!

.
...
What I would have given for a birds eye view for this shot!!!

Did any of you play with the parachute while in school?!  I remember it from way back! It was always a favourite thing for us kids and that seemed to ring true today!   Back then though, we used a beach ball but today there was a giant balloon!! The biggest balloon I have ever seen!  It was fantastic!!

But something today, that I did not smile about, was the fact that my hubby is sick!  He's never sick, never!  And last night he woke up feeling pretty bad and so he has spent most of the day in bed - other then when he mustered up the energy to come to the birthday part - but since he has spent most of the day in bed - I've had some pretty serious, "one on one" time with four special Littles that I love!

So what made me smile about each of them today....

I smile because of the baby, who loves her feet!  Not as much as I do, mind you, but it's adorable to watch her grab and pull and tug at them and all the while I know that all she wants to do is eat them!!!  Can you blame her?? Baby feet...nom, nom, nom!!!

 .

I smile because of my boy and his new found love of colouring!!  Though throwing his crayons down into the basement seems to be more enjoyable then colouring, he still seems to like it - especially when Daddy colours with him!

.
I seriously had to smile because of my oldest two gals, as I asked to take a picture of them....and well...got the varied results you see here;

..
I smile because of my eldest.  Her sweet, innocent, joy filled approach to life is something we could all take lessons from!  And though she is certainly maturing and yes, there was not all smiles today between her and I (attitude already?!?!) she's a precious gem and I am learning more from her then I think she will ever learn from me!

.

And I smile because of my second little lady.  For her ability to strike a pose as soon as she sees the camera!  For her servant heart, pray-warrior attitude and love of hugs!!  She makes me smile because she loves to chatter so....but that chatter can often tire me out.....but...I know that she comes by it honestly...so what can you do?! Hahahah!

.

And like I said, today there were many things that made me smile!  No, not hubby being sick - we came home from the party and he went straight to bed...in fact he's still sleeping as I type this...and supper has long since been over and the kids in bed for over an hour...poor man!!  But over all is was a smile filled day - some reasons to smile today were captured by the camera...and others...they were just captured in my heart! ♥

October Photo Challenge - Day 16 - Something You Wrote

Okay, so wow.  Today's challenge...was challenging....!

I don't know if it was because I don't write a whole lot....well not outside of on the computer...and yes, I totally considered taking a picture of my blog post and posting that as something I wrote...but instead I decided to take on the recipe I was writing out for a friend.

But the problem was, I don't like to write out recipes...in fact I hate it...greatly!  But I did, write it out and I did, settle on that as the subject for my picture.  But...maybe because of my strong distain for recipe writing, the picture was a struggle!!

I just couldn't get inspired...even a hundred plus photos later...I was still not getting the shot.

So in frustration, I reached for one of the cookies from the shoot, took a big ol' bite, set it down and there!  There was my shot!

 .

So decent enough, I think so...even for a recipe! ;)  And the cookies are delicious...sorry to post only part of a recipe...and I would type it out for you here...but you know...I hate writing them out! HA!

October Photo Challenge - Day 15 - A Mess

This, dear friends, is the space (there is actually a mesh basket there....you'll just have to trust me on that one!) between the driver and passenger seats of our mini van.

No matter what....our vehicles always end up in this type of mess!!  It's true....even before kids!  When we bought the van, I had such good intentions to keep it clean and organized...but that just doesn't seem to be the case! *sigh*

Wanna play eye-spy??

Here's what I found:

Half a pack of diapers
Box of Kleenex
My trusty water bottle
Two McDonald's cups
Empty box of coconut cookies
A leaf
Kim Walker's "Still Believe" CD (absolutely ADORE this one!!!)
Scrapper (for snow)
Baby toy
Random diapers....hopefully clean ones?!?
Umbrella
"Seed of Faith" CD (Amazing line of kids scripture CD's - very enjoyable and makes scripture memory easy! Love these!)
Two 'fortunes' from fortune cookies
Dirt
Essential and well used, travel mug
And random garbage

October Photo Challenge - Day 14 - Something You Made

My bed!

.

*Ba-dum-tshh*

So...as I pondered today's word....and that pun came to mind....so did the story...the reason why I make my bed each day...okay, most days!

It all started back in 2011.  Yes, I know the date even, that this all began....for you see, I had been reading, off and on for sometime then, a new blog that I had found.  I can't remember when exactly I first found this blog but I remember the post that made me first really connect with it.

It was a post on hospitality....more importantly, hospitality in our own home with our own family.  The writer talked about how she makes her bed everyday, including the children's beds (which I don't do...and probably never will!  But still...)  Anyways, she talked about how hospitality needs to be at home first.  To be something that we bestow on our family before it goes out to others and one way she did that was to make the bed each day.

She talked about how it is such a simple thing to do and that if nothing else gets done in the day, at least that did and then by days end you can crawl into a your sweet slumber place with ease.

And well...I think you should just go read the post - hey you can even see my comment there...from all those years ago: HERE

So who's blog does that link exactly take you to??  Why to my dear friend Bevy, over at Treasured Up and Pondered!

Haha!  I don't know if Bevy knows the impact that little post of hers has had on me.  That each (and truly, most) mornings I pull up the sheet, the duvet and quilt, fluff my feather pillow and toss on those tops ones...because I have a slight pillow addiction...that, in these moments I think of her!

I think of that post I read, a cold February morning all those years ago, and that the words and message I found there impact me to this day....everyday!  That this simple task can speak love and hospitality to those I share my life with.  That I can send a message that says, "I care and you matter to me." with a simple gesture.

So that, my friends, is the story behind the something I made....and I guess you could also say....I too, through all of this, have made a friend! ♥  Thank you Bevy for the encouragement, in my role as a homemaker and how that has impacted my heart all these years!

October Photo Challenge - Day 13 - Landscape

What a nice way to wrap up our Thanksgiving weekend!!  My mom and her husband came over for the afternoon.  There was pie, coffee, chatting and colouring with the kiddos.  They headed home and Dave and I decided for today's challenge that we would take a little drive - head off of our land and the usual landscape view and see some new sites.

.
Before heading out, I thought I would do a little Google search about what in particular defines or characterises a landscape photo.  I never really looked into it and I thought some research was due.

.
Some tips I found, I knew already and some were very helpful (this site was particularly good! And the photos - stunning!!!!)

It was a nice drive!  Since moving out of town, we really haven't done the scenic drive though the country much!  I mean we have to drive to go virtually anywhere so there isn't much appeal.  But today, after my mom left, the baby wouldn't settling in her bed (teething?!?) and it not being quite nice enough for a walk, a drive was in order!

.
So out we went and found some real purdy sights!  The leaves have been glorious this year but there are more and more bare trees each day!  And with our Thanksgiving over now, soon my thoughts will turn towards Christmas!

.
But while these fleeting fall days are here I will enjoy them, greatly! Bask in the colour and beauty, breath in the crisp air, bake up some delicious treats, rake leaf piles for the kids and maybe mow the lawn - one more time....maybe!

October Photo Challenge - Day 12 - On The Table

Yes, I realize this has photo has a similar feel to my lunchtime day shot (day 2) but apparently messy tables are a thing in our home!  And as I mentioned in my angle (day 8) photo - over head shots have fast become a favourite of mine over the last couple of years!!

.
Today, on the table, were my older gals, working away on various things.  I love their desire to create, explore and imagine!  We had a pajama day today, skipping out on church, due to colds in the house!

.
So my gals were busy with work books and picture making...before hunkering down to watch a couple of movies.  I do enjoy these lazy days....too bad it's so sunny out...I almost feel guilty about being indoors!

Oh and on my kitchen table...speaking of sunny, is a bunch of these little beauties!

.
A favourite flower of mine!  I just love them and how sun shiny they are!!  A whole bouquet of suns, sitting on my table! Just glorious!
